While forks were used in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome for cooking, their widespread adoption as a personal eating utensil in Europe did not occur until the 17th and 18th centuries. Early European forks often had only two tines and were sometimes viewed as an unnecessary affectation by the nobility.
