While often associated with concealment, balaclavas are widely used in motorsports to protect drivers from fire and to hold communication devices, while also providing a layer of hygiene inside helmets. Some extreme sports athletes also use balaclavas with integrated heating elements to prevent frostbite in sub-zero temperatures.
